How to restore a damaged wood floor?

A wood floor adds timeless charm to a home, whether it’s solid wood or engineered, lacquered or oiled. However, it is constantly subjected to wear and tear. Frequent foot traffic (wet shoes, high heels, dog claws), friction, and impacts can damage your wood flooring.

How to protect your wood floor?

Regular maintenance helps protect your wood floor from premature wear. Each type of wood floor requires specific care: ensure you clean your floor properly by following our recommendations and adopting the right habits depending on the floor finish.

Learn how to maintain lacquered wood flood and oiled wood floor.

Here are some simple daily precautions to help preserve your wood floor:

  • Place a doormat outside to catch sand and gravel, and an absorbent mat inside to dry your shoes.
  • Use furniture pads under all your furniture and chairs.
  • Place a rug under rolling chairs or furniture, or ensure their wheels are “wood floor friendly.”
  • Avoid walking on your wood flooring in high heels.

Despite regular maintenance and proper cleaning, sometimes a wood floor becomes too damaged and requires partial or total renovation.

How to choose between partial and total renovation?

An oiled wood floor can be partially renovated. If there’s a significant stain or scratch, sand the affected plank with fine-grit sandpaper to dull the area to be repaired. It’s important to vacuum the dust created by sanding. Shake the Panaget repair oil bottle well, and apply it to the area with a clean white cotton cloth to ensure the surface is well-coated. After a few minutes, polish the oiled area with a new clean white cotton cloth to achieve the desired colour.

A lacquered wood floor, on the other hand, cannot be partially renovated and will require either replacing the damaged planks or a complete renovation.

How to completely restore damaged wood flooring?

If the wear is extensive, a complete sanding of the wood flooring will be necessary. The same applies to deeply damaged oiled wood floors.
